The Greatest Gift: A Christmas Reflection

MAIN PASSAGE: Luke 2:8-14 (NLT)

Each year, as we gather for Christmas with our loved ones, we're reminded of the joy and anticipation that come with opening presents. As children, I’m sure we have all experienced the excitement of tearing into the gift wrap, expecting something we've been longing for, only to discover it's not what we expected.

This feeling, while seemingly trivial, serves as a reminder of a profound truth: when we seek satisfaction in worldly things, it will always leave us feeling empty.

There is something far better than all that we have been settling for—the gift of the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The first Christmas introduced an unexpected gift to an unexpected people in an unexpected place. The birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior, brought forth a gift of salvation. However, in the hustle and bustle of our lives, we often fail to realize this present before us.

This Christmas, I invite you to fix your eyes on Christ.

I am reminded of a social experiment conducted with Joshua Bell, a renowned violinist. Bell performed incognito in a subway station (You can find that video here!) The night before, people had paid hundreds of dollars to see him perform. Yet, in the subway station, only six people stopped to listen, and he collected a mere $32. The world's most famous violinist was in their midst, and they didn't recognize him.

The same can be said about Christ.

We often become so distracted by lesser things that we miss the presence of our Savior.

The good news brought by Christ's birth is for everyone. Regardless of where you are in life, Jesus is our joy. Even when life doesn't go the way we want, we can find solace in the fact that we have Christ within us.

Our Savior came to rescue us from our sins, not to fulfill our worldly desires.

Shepherds, despised in society as second-class citizens, were the first to receive the announcement of the Gospel. God chose them, not the religious or political leaders of the day, to announce His son's birth.

This is good news for all of us because it means that regardless of our social status, the gift of the Gospel is available to us.

Beyond just this Christmas, let us rejoice in the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Let us fix our eyes on Him and not be distracted by lesser things.

Let us remember that the greatest gift in history is in our midst.

Let's make the most of this gift and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all.
