Overcoming Jealousy through Humility and Faith

MAIN PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 18:5-9 (NLT)

Jealousy is a common human emotion that can often lead to bitterness and resentment.

It is a direct result of discontent and a lack of gratitude.

But, as believers, we are called to overcome jealousy through humility and faith.

The Hidden Cost of Pride

Pride often leads to jealousy.

When we allow ourselves to become prideful, we start comparing ourselves to others. We start to believe that their successes are our failures.

This can lead to an undercurrent of anxiety, fear, envy, and jealousy. The hidden cost of pride is isolation, which is exactly where we should not be!

Choosing Humility

Humility is a daily decision we are called to make. In the Bible, we see Jonathan, the son of King Saul, modeling true humility.

Despite being the son of the king, Jonathan did not become jealous when David, a shepherd boy from Bethlehem, was chosen to be king.

Instead, he embraced who God made him to be, even if it wasn't what the world expected.

Choosing humility means acknowledging that there will always be someone better, more talented, or more successful than us.

It also means finding joy in the successes of others, even if they surpass our own.

Repenting of Jealousy

Unchecked jealousy can lead to manipulation in our relationships and decision-making.

To combat jealousy, we need to repent.

We need to acknowledge our jealousy and ask God for forgiveness. Only the power of the Gospel can kill the jealousy living inside us.

Remembering Our Identity

We must remember our identity in Christ. He must become greater and greater, and we must become less and less. The peace of Jesus and jealousy cannot coexist in our hearts.

Jealousy reveals our deepest desires and who we are worshipping.

If we are jealous, it shows that we are worshipping ourselves and the things of this world, rather than Jesus. But in Christ, there is nothing we can do to make God love us anymore, and there is nothing we have done to make God love us any less.

Jesus is enough.

When Jesus is at the center of our lives, jealousy won't be.

And when we overcome jealousy through humility and faith, we can experience the everlasting joy that comes from knowing and following Christ.

Recap:

  1. Remember your identity: When we are living to give the Lord Glory, there is no need to compete!

  2. Choose Humility: In our world today, our greatness is rated on strength, wealth, intelligence, and influence. But for Jesus, it’s based on our humility.

  3. Repent of Jealousy: Only the power of the gospel will kill the jealousy living in us.

Remember: Jesus frees us from jealousy.
